NaNo or WIP?

Gha! What to do?

NaNo has just started and I planned to take part in it with a story idea and all, but then I've started rewriting my manuscript after months away from it (from scratch, save a couple of scenes), and I'm really on a roll with that one. Which do I do? I don't have the time to do both since my computer is busted...

  1. NaNo seems to me to be an activity on the side, and not the primary effort, as your manuscript seems to be.

  2. Tough call. I would say go with the WIP if you already have an outline. But if you want to start with something fresh then start something new with NaNo. Best Wishes. I am not participating but I will be your cheer leader.

  3. You could do your WIP as a NaNo thing in a sense. You can set a goal and try to get so many words out of it. I know several people that are doing that instead of doing a completely new project.

  4. I considered having it is my NaNo project, but it said on their homepage that you're not allowed to work on something you've already worked on (and I wouldn't want to cheat - I know I'll be able to reach the 50,000 on this since I'm already using some written parts (the visions).

I'm going to use the same approach though! At the and of November...or beginning of December, I will have finished this sparkling new edition, and it'll be a whole new story, and much shorter. I'm aiming for 75,000 words, which means 2500 words a day for 30 days. But since I don't have time on most weekends, it'll probably be roughly 3000 words every workday for the next five weeks.

I'm just feeling really fired up about this, read to take it on (first 3400 words are already written!). Still, if I just take it in small bits, like 3000 words (although that is a lot), I can get there - finally - after having my manuscript shoved in a folder for weeks and weeks. I'm starting to feel excited about it again after a long time in a rut.

Okay! You've convinced me ;) I'm going to do the WIP, and instead of using the NaNo page, so that I'm not cheating, I'll just use their gadget on my blog!

  5. Definitely the WIP (though you apparently no longer need convincing). I had to make the same decision, actually. Good for you for getting on a roll! :D

  6. I had the same dilemma and decided on continuing my WIP... then on November 1st I started having a change of heart and thinking about doing the brand new project instead. I'm still stuck in between on day two. Gah!

Good luck with your own conundrum and writing!

  7. Tessa, I've followed your blog for a while, but I haven't had a chance to visit too much. I'm excited for your WIP! I had the same debate whether I should do the nano or work on what I'm already working on and I picked my WIP. Nano next year!

By the way, I've wanted to invite you to be a guest on my Aspiring Author Friday at my blog. My blog is http://perfectingthecraft.blogspot.com/ and my email is michellemmerrill (at) hotmail (dot) com
Email me if you'd want to be on next Friday :)

Oh, and I have three year old twins too. Aren't they a handful, I mean fun :)

  8. Handful is a vast understatement! Well, okay, it's a little easier now than when they were younger. I've heard that if you thought the task was impossible the first two years, you'll think it's easy from there on out (and vise versa).

I'd love to be a guest on your Aspiring Author Friday! I'll email you now :)

  9. Hi, I just found your blog while searching the old "how to find an agent" thing. It's been an interesting read to go through your ponderings about the whole issue, I can relate to so much of it. Thanks for sharing that writoncon.com link regarding queries. I am excited to have revamped my query that I have been so frustrated with (and that obviously didn't work). THANKS!
